Payment of Trinity and Advent Offertories to HMS - 11 March 1998 From time to time this office receives enquiries about the practice of parochial units paying their Trinity and Advent Sunday offertories to Sydney Anglican Home Mission Society, operating currently as ANGLICARE ("HMS"). The practice derives from a recommendation made by the Synod in 1872 that "all the licensed clergymen and catechists and all the churchwardens in the Diocese .... devote the whole of their collections on the first Sunday in Advent and on the first Sunday after Easter to the General Fund of the Church Society". The Synod has confirmed the substance of this recommendation on subsequent occasions. Currently, HMS applies Trinity and Advent offertories paid by parochial units to the support of its chaplaincy ministries in general and psychiatric hospitals, prisons and juvenile correction centres. Further enquiries about the practice of paying offertories to HMS should be made directly to HMS. Kind regards MARK PAYNE
